MONTESSORI EXPLAINED
What is a Montessori School?
Montessori schools are based on the philosophy and teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori (1870 - 1952). Although there can be differences among schools, Montessori emphasizes learning through the five senses (Practical Life, Math, Sensorial, Science Culture, and Language Arts). An individual learning pace is emphasized and children are encouraged to pick their own activities from many possibilities. A love of learning can be a stimulating process of discovery that cultivates increased concentration, self-motivation and discipline. Montessori philosophy places children in three-year age groups (3 - 6, 6 - 9, 9 - 12). These clusters form communities encouraging group and individualized learning in which older children share their knowledge with younger ones.
